United Church Homes and Services

United Church Homes and Services has been providing retirement community housing and services to older adults since 1971, and has several facilities in North Carolina and Virginia.

The UCHS Foundation was established in 2000 with a vision of raising funds in support of the mission and ministry of United Church Homes and Services, and has since raised over $6 million, and disbursed over $2 million for benevolence and other programs supporting residents and staff.

As part of their unique approach to senior living and an ongoing commitment to ensure the best quality of life possible, UCHS took a bold step at its Piedmont Crossing retirement community by creating three new residential skilled nursing households with an updated living model focusing on resident empowerment, privacy and lifestyle choices provided in concert with skilled nursing care.

In order to bring this vision to reality, then UCHS Foundation CEO, Mary Wesley, contracted Capital Development Services to conduct a feasibility study and help plan the foundation's first major capital campaign. The campaign helped offset costs for this $9 million reconfiguration of healthcare on the Thomasville, NC campus.

Having previously conducted board training for the UCHS Foundation, CapDev had established a strong and comfortable working relationship with the UCHS leadership. We helped to plan and implement the campaign, and even helped hire the current Foundation CEO, Nancy Beard. After utilizing nearly every service offered by Capital Development Service, in an exit interview, former CEO Doug Fleegle said that CapDev, "went beyond the typical consultant to bring the capital campaign to a conclusion as well as building the fundraising culture of our organization." This statement summarizes well one of our company mantras – we want our work to help build sustainable fund development.

Additionally, Fleegle commented on CapDev's work to build capacity, "working our way out of a job," and referred to CapDev counsel as "professional and knowledgeable, helping to bolster the entire fundraising program."

In this case, "from initiating to building the program to conducting the search to now being able to go out on our own," CapDev was there with the client from concept to completion.
