The Opportunity | National Technical Honor Society

The National Technical Honor Society currently serves approximately 100,000 active members and has had nearly one million members since its inception in 1984.  Awarding over $2 million in scholarships to date, NTHS honors the achievements of top CTE (Career and Technical Education) students, provides scholarships to encourage the pursuit of higher education, and cultivates excellence in today’s highly competitive, skilled workforce. For over 30 years, NTHS has been the acknowledged leader in the recognition of outstanding student achievement in career and technical education.

NTHS helps schools recognize students for their achievement in career and technical education. Members receive a membership certificate in a professional presentation portfolio. In addition, members receive an official NTHS diploma seal, graduation tassel, lapel pin, and window decal to show their affiliation with NTHS.

The Position | Executive Director

The Executive Director acts as the Chief Executive Officer of the organization and is responsible for the overall management and direction of the organization in accordance with its vision and mission. The Executive Director works under the general oversight of the Board of Directors.

The Executive Director provides oversight and overall management, planning, vision and leadership for all aspects of the NTHS, including operations, finance, resource development, human resources, chapter and member services, scholarships, communications, and board development. The Executive Director assumes a leadership role throughout Career and Technical Education in partnering with collaborating businesses, other nonprofits, and supporters. The Executive Director works with the board and Executive Committee to establish vision, policies, strategic focus, priorities, and general scope of operations and services NTHS will deliver.

Support and work with the Board of Directors

  • Take direction from the Board of Directors and work with the board to assure that NTHS operates with a clear mission and a long-range strategic plan that is consistent with the mission of supporting career and technical education.
  • Provide leadership in developing the NTHS as an effective, high quality organization promoting Career and Technical Education students.  The Executive Director will work collaboratively with board members and representatives of other member-based organizations, both locally and nationally, to strengthen the NTHS footprint and the capacity to provide resources to chapter schools and students. The Executive Director will keep the board informed, at minimum annually, of the business partnership opportunities, and current status of partnerships and any/all programming or contractual issues related to said partnerships. 
  • Keep the Board of Directors fully informed on conditions, opportunities, issues, and challenges and the environment in which it operates so that the board can carry out is governance, financial oversight and leadership role.
  • Develop with the board, on a yearly basis, a work plan for the board to carry forward the strategic plans.
  • Provide for the coordination of board meetings and communications.
  • Serve as staff member to all board committees unless otherwise directed.
  • Serve on board committees as non-voting member and act as liaison to the board.

Management of Office

  • Provide overall staff direction and supervision (directly supervise program management staff), develop a yearly work plan with staff which includes goals, objectives, inputs and outcomes, and timeline for the programs and services to be carried out by NTHS.
  • Provide ongoing management to assure the organization stays within approved plans and budgets.
  • Develop key staff members to work with the office of the Executive Director on contracts with outside vendors, professional organizations, and capacity builders, and institute with staff quality assurance and supervision strategies to assure effective performance.
  • Represent the organization, or assign a designee, in negotiations with contractors.
  • Effectively manage the human resources of NTHS in a manner which supports a productive, professionally competent, accountable work force in an environment respectful of personal well-being and cultural diversity. Manage hiring, firing, and resolution of grievances.

Manage Finance and Growth

  • Develop annual budget and submit to board for approval.
  • Develop strategic partnerships (including funding relationships) with business partners and maintain regular communications with key partner sources.
  • Identify growth opportunities, develop plan of action and work teams to help grow NTHS. 
  • Contract for and oversee annual audit.
  • Monitor expenditures and income, plan for core budget self-sufficiency.
  • Maintain capital assets of corporation.

Management of Chapter and Student Services

  • Oversee the interactive web site development and implementation. 
  • Oversee Chapter Development and Student Services social media communications.
  • Ensure program quality and consistency with organizational goals through ongoing evaluation of all programs and services to determine effectiveness and school/member relationships. 
  • Work with board and staff to develop policies for all program processes to include chapter requirements, student requirements, and scholarships.
  • Oversee development and coordination of events and new programs, conferences, workshops, publications, website, and endorsed service provider relationships.
  • Develop and maintain corporate and business relationships.

Public Presence of Leader in Career & Technical Education Advocacy Efforts

  • Develop a communication and advocacy strategy to enhance the NTHS image/brand on career and technical education and to ensure a presence in the general media as a leader of this effort.
  • Serve as lead spokesman and speaker for the NTHS and assure that the organization’s mission is properly presented to various publics.
  • Build relationships with external CTE stakeholders; develop the capacity to convene stakeholders around national and regional issues impacting CTE.
  • Develop effective and ongoing relationships with media.
  • Develop relationships with other associations, organizations, and persons pertinent to the education and/or CTE sector; coordinate activities and co-sponsor events.
  • Presence is expected/needed at conferences and similar events.

Qualities and Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Nonprofit Management, Public Policy or equivalent required
  • Six years senior management experience; nonprofit or educational experience preferred 
  • Understanding of and a demonstrable ability to build partnerships
  • Supervisory and personnel experience
  • Financial management background
  • Experience working with board of directors
  • Evidence of commitment to missions of the education sector
  • Possess an open-minded, team-focused, approach to creative problem solving and critical thinking
  • Ability to clearly articulate ideas, concerns, and initiatives to administration, staff, members, and the public
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to organize and plan work to meet deadlines
  • Ability to develop and maintain a variety of productive and cooperative work relationships external and internal to NTHS 
  • A willingness to be held accountable and to hold staff accountable for the success of the organization
  • Communicate effectively in written and oral form
  • Valid driver’s license

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of reaching, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.  Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Must possess the visual acuity to prepare data and statistics, to work with accounting processes, to operate a computer terminal, and to perform extensive research and reading.
