Think like an Olympian: A Job Seeker’s Guide to Standing Out in a Search

By Stephanie Flores de Valgaz

The Olympics have just kicked off and we can’t help but think about the correlation between the actions and attitudes of a gold-medal athlete and a champion candidate. Through our experience of interviewing hundreds of candidates for executive searches on behalf of our nonprofit clients, we believe the dedication, perseverance, and strategic planning exhibited by athletes can serve as a powerful blueprint for rising to the top of the candidate pool. Here are five actions you can take to stand out from the pack.

1.      Set a clear goal: Athletes set clear, measurable goals for their training and performance. These goals provide direction and motivation, helping them stay focused even when the going gets tough. For job seekers, setting clear career objectives can similarly provide a roadmap. Define what success looks like for you—whether it’s landing a particular role such as development director, contributing to a particular cause in the nonprofit sector, or advancing to a leadership position. Break these goals down into actionable steps, such as networking and acquiring new skills.

2.      Find mentors and support: Behind every Olympian is a team of coaches, mentors, and supporters. These individuals provide guidance, share insights, and offer encouragement. Whether you are on the job hunt or not, nonprofit professionals seeking to level up their performance should also seek out mentors and build a support network. Connect with industry professionals, join relevant organizations, and participate in networking events. Mentors are invaluable, not only helping you navigate the job market and providing introductions to key contacts, but their experience and perspective can help you avoid certain pitfalls and accelerate your journey to the top. Don’t be intimidated to ask for mentoring – people are very willing to share advice.

3.      Train and Prepare:  For over a decade, Katie Ledecky has gone undefeated in the 800m freestyle. How? This icon swimmer has dedicated years to training, honing her skills, and pushing her limits. Similarly, job candidates must invest in their preparation. This means not only acquiring the necessary qualifications and experience but also researching potential employers, understanding their missions, and identifying how your skills can meet their needs. Be sure to ask questions that demonstrate you have been actively listening to the interviewer and that you have done your homework on the organization.

4.      Showcase Your Strengths: There is no one else on the planet just like you. What is it that makes you unique and how do those attributes, perspectives, expertise, and experiences position you to lead like no other? Like Simon Biles’ signature moves on the gymnastics floor, tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight these strengths and be prepared to articulate them in interviews. Executive search teams filter through hundreds of applications so demonstrating what sets you apart will make you memorable to recruiters.

5.      Develop your Brand: Michael Jordan, THE G.O.A.T., has indelibly shaped the shoe branding industry as we know it. But what made this two-time Olympic gold medal winner’s shoes stand out from those of his contemporaries? It wasn’t the actual shoes, but rather the man who wore them that gave Jordans their cache. Your brand is the combination of your professional reputation, the way you present yourself, and the unique qualities that distinguish you from others. Start by defining your core values and strengths. What do you stand for? What are your key skills and accomplishments? If you have an online presence on platforms like LinkedIn, your activity should reinforce your brand and demonstrate your passion and commitment to your field. When you attend industry conferences, your interactions should reflect your brand and build a positive, professional image. Over time, a strong personal brand will make you more recognizable and attractive to recruiters and potential employers, increasing your chances of rising to the top of the candidate pool in an executive search.

The journey to the top of the candidate pool, much like the path to Olympic gold, requires dedication, strategic planning, and unwavering perseverance. By adopting the mindset and strategies of Olympians, you can significantly enhance your search prospects.
