WILMINGTON,
N.C.
– The Battleship NORTH CAROLINA
announced today a $500,000 donation from BB&T. Captain Terry Bragg, Executive
Director for the Battleship, states, “The Battleship NORTH CAROLINA is
privileged to receive this significant donation. BB&T has been one of the longest
and strongest supporters of the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA and we are pleased to
continue this relationship.”

Every year, nearly a quarter-million
visitors come to see, to hear, to touch to reflect and to feel what is was like
to live on a living city at sea. They come to share their experiences and
stories with family, friends. The generous donation will assist in
repairing the ship so future generations can as well become part of the
Battleship history.”

The Battleship NORTH CAROLINA is a
living memorial to those who serve their country. It is also a center for
education and inspiration to future generations of leaders. Self-supporting,
not tax supported, the Battleship relies primarily upon admissions to tour the
Ship, sales in the Ship’s Store, donations and investments. No funds for its
administration and operation come from appropriations from governmental
entities at the local, state or federal levels.

“Battleship North Carolina has a
demonstrated history for its ability to successfully conduct a public-private
partnership capital drive,” said Kelly King, Chairman and CEO of BB&T and
Statewide Honorary Chair of the Battleship Generations Campaign. “Battleship
North Carolina operates on its own successes as a business, but it needs our
help when major capital needs are pressing. BB&T is proud to be a corporate
sponsor of the Generations Campaign.”

At the time of her commissioning on
9 April 1941, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA was considered the world’s greatest
sea weapon. Armed with nine 16-inch/45 caliber guns in three turrets and twenty
5-inch/38 caliber guns in ten twin mounts, NORTH CAROLINA proved a formidable
weapons platform. Her wartime complement consisted of 144 commissioned officers
and 2,195 enlisted men, including about 100 Marines.
