The North Carolina Zoo Society engaged CapDev in 2019 to begin planning a significant campaign to fund the expansion of two new continents: Asia and Australia.

In addition to securing Connect NC bond funding, this public-private partnership brought key statewide leaders together to build a major campaign for this iconic state treasure.

With the dedication and generosity of long-time supporters like the late Earl Johnson Jr., past board chair, the NC Zoo Society is well on its way to meeting its goals and giving us all a new reason to visit Asheboro.

A $2 million gift from the SECU Foundation was announced in May 2023, adding to the campaign’s $30 million raised to date.

“The NC Zoo Society is honored to have been selected as an SECU Foundation grant recipient. Partnerships like this will help us build the new Asia Habitat expansion and continue our goal of securing a safe and enduring future for the Zoo and its programs,” said NC Zoo Society Board Chair John Ruffin.

This significant gift for this important project even garnered the attention of an article in Candid’s Philanthropy News Digest this month.
