Tybee Island Marine Science Center Groundbreaking Held Last Week

Posted on

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Tybee Marine Science Center at the North Beach on Wednesday.

It was great to see hundreds of Tybee residents, business leaders and elected officials help celebrate this major event. We had a little bit of rain but that never keeps us from celebrating good news!

The new center is the result of years of planning and the input of Tybee residents in the early stages definitely helped guide us to where we are today.

Sottile & Sottile designed the beautiful new facility with some exciting features that will enable visitors to learn more about marine life and their habitat. As you may know, the current TIMSC building was not built for that purpose.

When the new building is complete next year, it will benefit Tybee residents as well as attract families to Tybee, educating them about being good stewards of the environment and to appreciate and care for our coastal resources. The new TIMSC will have interpretive exhibits, an amphitheater, Shark School, animal rescue activities, a dune habitat trail, and more.

In order to ensure sufficient parking for beach-goers and the new TIMSC, we will have a net increase in 30 parking spaces.

Again, thank you for your support of the new center. We hope that you will join us when we have the grand opening celebration next year!

Jason Buelterman, Mayor
